Kiran Rao feels it’s unfair and low of people to credit ex-husband Aamir Khan for her success

Filmmaker Kiran Rao recently discussed the perception that her success is largely attributed to her ex-partner, actor Aamir Khan. During a fun game of ‘glow or low,’ Kiran labelled this notion as a definite low. Rao elaborated on her feelings, she even acknowledged her ex-partner’s support and appreciated him.

Kiran Rao feels low when Aamir Khan is credited for her success

During Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Mirchi Plus show, What Women Want, she presented Kiran with placards. The cards read ‘low’ and ‘glow’ to respond to various statements. When asked about the belief that her success is connected to Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao held up the ‘low’ placard. She elaborated on her feelings about this perception. She acknowledged and credited Aamir for much of her success and appreciated the support he provided. However, it feels strange for others to attribute her achievements solely to him.

She said, “The thing is, I kind of feel it’s natural because he is known as someone who does such quality work, so you attribute. Personally, I attribute a lot of success in life to having a very supportive and bright partner who intellectually matches me and supports everything I do. He has a hand in my life, but for others to attribute my accomplishments solely to him is a… and I think a lot of women are accustomed to that happening to them.”

In the same interview, Kiran stated that she can ‘barely tolerate’ it when Aamir ‘goes off’ and gives a ‘lecture’. She also said it’s ‘not quite mansplaining’, but it comes ‘close to that’. Kiran and Aamir were married from 2005 to 2021. They co-parent their son Azad.

Kiran Rao’s recent work

Kiran’s latest film, Laapataa Ladies, has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars. The film features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan in lead roles. It was released in theatres in March. Kiran made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat in 2011 and has co-produced notable films such as Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, Peepli Live, Delhi Belly, Talaash, and Dangal along with Aamir Khan.
